5.5-inch iPhone 6 may run landscape apps with more productive iPad-like interface

While the 4.7-inch version of the upcoming iPhone 6 will seemingly function as a large version of the current iPhone interface, it appears that the larger model with a 5.5-inch display could run software in landscape mode with an iPad-like user interface (portrait views likely remain unchanged). Developer Steven Troughton-Smith altered the iOS simulator to run at 736 points x 414 points (1472 x 828 at 2x or 2208 x 1242 at 3x), the resolution we first reported was likely in the cards for at least one iPhone 6 model, and provided us with screenshots of the presented interface…

As can be seen in the screenshots (above and below), this potential landscape interface for the 5.5-inch model presents a more productive workspace with dual-panes. For instance, you can now see an entire month view in the calendar along with a longer list of events. This also means that you can view individual contact cards alongside your full contacts list.

The effect is the same for Game Center as can be seen above.

While the iPhone Simulator cannot run any other apps with the iPad-like interface on the iPhone, it’s possible that other iPhone apps may see some optimized interfaces for the 5.5-inch model.

Apple built in the technologies for this interface with iOS 8 under the umbrella name of “Adaptive UI.” It is discussed in WWDC 2014 session number 216.

As of now, it appears that portrait view is the same as on the 4.7-inch iPhone and current iPhone. Of course, this could all just be a glitch in the iOS 8/Xcode 6 beta 7 Simulator, but it makes sense that the largest iPhone ever would get an optimized interface. Regardless, we’ll know Tuesday.

I haven’t been this excited for an iPhone release since the iPhone 4…. Can’t wait for Tuesday!

  2. fluhartyml - 10 years ago

Reblogged this on Fluharty Industries and commented:
I’m going to get one of these! Bad Ass sick iPhones

  3. I’m sort of hoping this function would come to the 4.7″ as well. I get that its a smaller screen size, but they already put up with “crammed” interfaces when you put a current 4″ iPhone into landscape anyway (Compose screen in the Messages app in landscape mode is brutal).

It’s crazy that 9to5mac believes that purported working iPhone 6 is not a fake. Apple really would be doomed if they were stupid enough to make the clock hands as long as they are in that purported working iPhone 6. Can’t wait to see the real one on Tuesday, which will look similar to that, but not the software, and the case will look far better, and the panel will have thinner bezels, and not look like cheap plastic.

    • Not to mention the colors on the icons were horribly off. Looked like iOS 7 beta icons.

      • rogifan - 10 years ago

Um not a chance that anyone at 9to5Mac has a review unit. Heck, they’re not even invited to the event. Why would Apple give them a review unit?

    • iluvappleblog - 10 years ago

What makes you think they believe that? Chances are Mark Gurman already has a review unit with him right now and knows very well whether it’s fake or not. I would actually think that them not outright labeling it as a fake, confirms that it’s fake and they know that big surprise is coming tomorrow.

      • o0smoothies0o - 10 years ago

This article. ‘While the 4.7-inch version of the upcoming iPhone 6 will seemingly function as a large version of the current iPhone interface…’ ‘seemingly function’ links to the video of the fake phone.

Mark definitely isn’t given a review unit. Maybe a few extremely liked and close people like that Jim guy, that’s about it.

      • iluvappleblog - 10 years ago

Have u not noticed that the majority of the first hand new iPhone leaks on 9to5 are broken by Mark, usually crediting “sources at Apple”, trust me he has a review unit.

      • o0smoothies0o - 10 years ago

Why would they give review units to someone that ousts their secretive information? You think they want people to know all of this stuff? Apple PR probably tells Jim when he can say ‘Yep’ or ‘Nope’, that’s about it for leaks.

      • iluvappleblog - 10 years ago

That piece came directly from Apple PR, it has their stamp written all over it. I think it’s inline with projecting their new direction, and more open Apple. Mark wouldn’t do the same mistake done by NYT, he wouldn’t wanna be in Apple’s bad books, and face their Arsenal.

      • o0smoothies0o - 10 years ago

I wasn’t really referring to that, more so all of the leaks he gives. Apple wants all of it to remain a surprise if possible.

    • iluvappleblog - 10 years ago

I’m 99% sure that Apple had a hand in the leak of that purported iPhone 6, objective, hype and to draw attention and show the public how to differentiate between the real thing and the fakes doing rounds.

    • Dean Har - 10 years ago

I’m convinced its fake because of the bezels and how drastically different the design quality is from the black iPhone 6 video posted a few days ago.

The clock hands may be too long, but maybe Apple thinks the clock looks too “vanilla” for iOS 7/8 and that these longer hands are more edgy…

Maybe it’s some new budget iPhone? iPhone 6C? Functional prototype? Damn we’re gonna keep guessing all the way until the final moment.

      • o0smoothies0o - 10 years ago

The longer hands are more ‘edgy’ in that the minute hand almost touches the edge of the circle, completely overlapping the numbers. It’s simply something Apple would never do.

Anyway you are right that the recent video was far far better looking. Those from feld and Volk and the Russian video were real.

      • Cun Con - 10 years ago

You’ll be disappointed because I think it’s the real deal…live Clock icon wouldn’t be easy to fake. With the much detail and finish, I would’ve taken someone great deal of time to fake something like that just 2 days before the release…
I remember all kind of fake iPhone 5 and 2 days before the release, boom, the picture iPhone 5 was leaked and it was the exact one released later…

      • iluvappleblog - 10 years ago

There is one difference with prior leaks of previous iPhones and the current one. This iPhone 6 happen to be the most leaked in history, but somehow not a single leak that shows a production grade casing complete with regulatory markings, this is also another reason why this new leak is probably fake, it has markings where all the legitimate leaks lack regulatory markings.

    • scottwilkins - 10 years ago

You seem to be the one that’s confused here, not 9to5. EVERYTHING so far on the new iPhones is 100% speculation. Everyone knows that (except you.) There is a fine line between “fake” and speculation, and that line is knowledge of statements. We know it’s speculation therefore a statement of “fake” is utterly useless.

      • o0smoothies0o - 10 years ago

You may want to look up the definition of speculation.

  5. fredhstein - 10 years ago

    It will be huge.
The naysayers will look like the fools they are.
There are so many upside catalysts: Mobile transactions, big upgrade cycle, High-end mobile games and enterprise Apps (over time), the IBM alliance, the wrist device ushering a new UI and getting it right, and Beats headphones growing into smart headphones and Beats streaming. It will take years for all this to unfold. And that’s good.

    • herb02135go - 10 years ago

Yes, years for it to unfold.
Because most of what is announced Tuesday won’t be for sale until 2015.

Of course, Samsung already offers what Apple is talking about.

      • o0smoothies0o - 10 years ago

Come on herb, you know Apple’s payment method will be completely unmatched. It will probably remain that way. They’ll actually get stores on board, and the Touch ID makes it so simple, along with your credit/debit card information already attached to your iTunes account.

      • Nothing better to do than troll Apple news sites? Got to ask yourself why you feel the need to do that.

      • fredhstein - 10 years ago

herb, if you’re referring to ‘gear’, right. But Apple will do it right. Just a Apple got MP3 players right with iPad. They were NOT first to the MP3 market.

  6. who needs a Tuesday keynote when we have 9to5mac telling us everything

    • herb02135go - 10 years ago

Nothing is happening Tuesday. Just Apple’s annual mass.

      • o0smoothies0o - 10 years ago

You’ll be watching too, don’t lie. Who wouldn’t be interested in seeing their watch, even if they had no interest in getting one, or in Apple?

    • scottwilkins - 10 years ago

Who needs comments like what you made?

  7. lint (@lint2015) - 10 years ago

This adaptive UI might also be designed for when simultaneous side-by-side apps come to iPad. That video floating around of some guy getting that somewhat working in iOS Simulator shows the app adopt an iPhone-like UI when it was resized down. I can imagine this being used in that situation.

  8. yakuzahi - 10 years ago

    What with multi-screen?

  9. Darron Crowe - 10 years ago

Bigger is better. Well not really, but I think the option to have a bigger iPhone would be a nice change (even though the initial new iPhone is going to be bigger already). Apple is targeting the Samsung Galaxy S5 as well as the Note 3 to take some of that market share rather than letting Samsung run away with the category of the bigger screen cell phone. When you move on up to the bigger screen iPhone make sure to trade in your old iPhone for some cash the easy way at http://www.farewellcell.com.

  10. rogifan - 10 years ago

Well gee, someone at Apple is thinking straight,

  11. iluvappleblog - 10 years ago

I somehow suspect that Apple might be unveiling a new smartphone that will be positioned much higher than the current iPhone line up. This luxury version of the smartphone will be the one that will sport a sapphire display and will probably be available at the same time as the iWatch. There is definitely a large market higher than the current one that needs to be tapped.

  12. Cun Con - 10 years ago

Excellent idea: iPhone that runs iPad apps. This is not simply a big iPhone, but a cross-over iPhone. I don’t recall any android phone could do this…well, I’ll take it back, Android phones all run same apps as tablets because …there’s no dedicated table apps anyway…they’re all the same apps stretched to fit the screen…lol.
If it’s true, this is first of its kind to run tablet apps.

    • patstar5 - 10 years ago

Well they do have seperate Interfaces on android it just depends on your screen size. You can use an app that will trick the app that you are using a bigger screen. Idk what the use of a smaller iPad will be. IPad mini was tiny enough. Who is going to want an even smaller one? Well I am never buying apple products again until prices are lowered. I will never pay more than $600 for off contract phone

  13. Maples Kongdan - 10 years ago

    I think bigger is better.

  14. patstar5 - 10 years ago

What will happen to iPod touch?
Well $650+ for iPhone 6 and $750+ for iPhone 6l. No thank you apple.

  15. dam1999sam - 10 years ago

What is probability of a yet to be named/predicted product gets a One More Thing moment and is introduced? TV? A real TV. Seems to me the easiest prediction going into tomorrow is there will be 1-3 complete surprises. Maybe the surprises are some amazing tech specs or new material…LQMT I’m pulling for you!…but maybe it will be the introduction of something way off the radar right now.

  16. I wouldn’t mind that on my iPhone 5 either…

  17. William Robinson - 10 years ago

If only the Net Slowdown was scheduled for Tuesday rather than Wednesday. Not being able to see the Apple Event would cause the FCC to be swamped with Net Neutrality emails. Of course with the slowdown none of those emails would get through to them.

    • scottwilkins - 10 years ago

Yet still, we have a glut of bandwidth available. To have a slow down at all is utterly stupid.

  18. Charlie - 10 years ago

I wish there was a a way to have go into full blown “iPad mode”, act like a mini version of the iPad mini ;)
